Morbid Landscapes
Morbid Landscapes is a Fine Art photography thesis that gives a disturbing, compelling, and beautiful commentary of how I see murder as a scar on humanity's prestige. The photographs are based on my experience as a photojournalist, where I have been witness to the aftermath of the heinous crime of murder. The photographs use the visually stunning landscapes to emulate our high esteem we project onto society juxtaposed with the stain of death, which we choose to ignore. The body becomes lost in the scenes over time much like our desensitization to the act itself. While never really going away, the crime becomes part of the landscape, slowly decomposing into the organic nature that it lies in, but the tarnish of its violence remains a constant infliction through each changing landscape.
To view the full details of each scene, I use a 4x5 color film with a Sinar F2 large format camera. The photographs are captured with Portra 400 or Extar 100 speed film. The final presentation of the project will be sixteen 24x30 framed digital C-prints. Details associated with the large format are important in how the viewer engages and delves into the space to investigate the crime scene for themselves.
